What is Laser Epilation?

Epilation is literally defined as getting rid of unwanted hair. The effort to get rid of unwanted hair has a history that goes back to ancient Egypt. Since human beings (men and women) started using clothing to protect themselves from the cold, they have been in trouble of getting rid of their own hair.

During this historical process, he developed various products and methods ranging from traditional waxing to state-of-the-art laser epilation and tried to remove hair and hair.

Among these methods, laser epilation, which seems to be the most up-to-date and impressive, seems to be a great hope in getting rid of unwanted hair permanently and painlessly.

What is Laser Epilation?
The problem of excessive hair growth, which occurs due to the drugs used, hormonal changes and hereditary characteristics, has become the nightmare of everyone, both men and women. Although wax, tweezers, razors and sold chemical creams are used to get rid of the problem of excessive hairiness, which also disrupts the aesthetic posture, none of them are a permanent solution. Laser epilation, which offers permanent solutions to the problem of hair growth, directly affects the hair follicles, converts the color substance melanin into heat, thus destroying the hair follicles and extending the growth period of hair. Transforming into heat, melanin expands and causes the hair follicles here to be destroyed.

The person who decides on laser epilation should talk to a specialist in order to observe possible situations; The method suitable for the hair structure should be determined by revealing the hairs on the body and its characteristics. Thus, how successful the laser application will be on the person is revealed. During this interview, you should discuss the possible results with your doctor and explain the medications you have used and your medical history.

After consulting with your doctor, the method and time to be applied for epilation is determined. Again, before the procedure, the specialist physician applies various tests to reveal the suitability of your skin structure and the result of laser epilation on the hair.

Types of Laser Epilation
Three types of laser application are performed in epilation and each one is determined according to a different hair and hair structure. Which of these lasers is suitable for you is revealed as a result of some tests, and an inappropriate laser experiment usually fails. However, it is possible to completely get rid of this problem with laser application suitable for skin and hair type.

Alexandrite Laser Epilation
The Alexandrite laser, which gives successful results on light skins, is known as a very practical and effective procedure. The reason why the Alexandrite laser is kept so much is that it removes the hairs immediately after the procedure and removes them from the surface.

GentleLASE, with its Alexandrite 755 nm wavelength, is a fast, comfortable and convenient first class laser epilation system compatible with all skin colors of Candela. It is used in more than 10 million treatments per year with more than 25,000 users in 92 countries around the world. It is the most preferred Alexandrite Laser system with over 300 users in our country. It also provides excellent and versatile use in pigment lesions, vascular lesions and wrinkle treatments.

Laser Epilation Technologies
While Albert Enstein was working on quantum in 1917, he was actually laying the foundation of laser application. In this theory, although the methods and techniques required to create the laser are described in general, the first laser applications were carried out for the first time in 1960 due to the lengthy research and new discoveries. The first laser developed this year was called the "ruby laser" and it was the first functional laser.

The results of the studies were first used in military and industrial areas. For the first time in many years, lasers have been developed that can also be used for medical treatment methods. Later, short and single-shot laser devices emerged. 1983 was a breakthrough period for laser application, and it started to be used in many areas from spot treatment to tattoo removal, from the treatment of capillaries to the problem of hair growth. Light laser applications were performed for the first time in 1994. Laser epilation, which has been in a continuous development since the 1990s, has been applied in medical centers and was approved by the FDA for the first time in 1998.

The purpose of this process is to neutralize the function of hair follicles. For this, melanin, which is in the hair follicles and known as a color substance, is exposed to high heat with the rays given during laser epilation, and as a result of this heat, the melanin destroys the hair follicles and prevents them from doing its job. Thus, hair follicles lose their growth function and hair growth is no longer seen in that area. For this reason, the application is effective only on black hairs and does not work on white or gray hairs.

Considering the body structure of the person and the characteristics of hair follicles, one of the types of Diode, Alexandrite and nd: yag laser epilation is determined and the process is started. Each of the laser types is effective according to the place of use. So one of them has no superiority over the other; Only each method provides successful results on a different skin structure and hair root.

Laser Epilation Application Procedure
When performing laser epilation, first of all, a specialist doctor trained in this area should examine the skin and hair structure of the person. After the evaluation, whether the person is suitable for laser epilation, the characteristics of the skin type, which laser type will be used, the possible success percentage and side effects are explained to the people. After all, the laser type is selected for the right treatment. As a result, laser application suitable for skin type should be selected in order to get rid of hair and hair completely. After the determination of the most suitable method for the person, epilation is started. Lasers are named according to the short length of their wavelengths:
Diode Laser Hair Removal
Alexandrite Laser Hair Removal
Nd:YAG Laser Hair Removal

What does the success of laser epilation process depend on?
The selection of the device is very important for the smooth operation and success.
The most successful results in laser epilation are obtained in people with light skin color. Because in this skin type, the response to the rays is given faster and the dose of laser beams is higher in light skinned people. Since the increase in dosage is a factor that directly affects the success, it can be said that light-skinned people get more satisfactory results from such applications.
Another factor in the success of epilation is the hair structure and color. The thicker the bristles, the better the result will be. Again, thicker bristles respond faster to the procedure than thin ones. In fine hair, this rate is either very low or not at all. Diode laser can be applied to people with fine hair. Thanks to this laser, there is a decrease in such hairs.

The laser type is chosen according to the body area where epilation will be performed. Since the face is very sensitive, Diode laser is used in this area instead of Alexandrite laser due to the side effect of hair growth. Alexandrite laser works mostly for armpits, leg area and genital organs.
The average success rate of laser epilation is higher in women compared to men. If there is any medical disease behind hair growth, this underlying condition should be treated before epilation.
The area where epilation will be applied: One of the most difficult areas in epilation is the face area. Diode lasers are the ideal choice for the facial area. It should not be preferred in the face area. The armpits, genitals and lower leg areas are the areas where laser epilation gives the best results.

What should be considered before laser epilation?
Before laser epilation:
One month before laser epilation takes place, the hairs should not be removed with tweezers, razor blades or wax, but should be left to grow. Because in order for laser epilation to be successful, the rays must see the hair follicles and go deeper. In addition, it is important not to sunbathe for 1.5 months before the application and that the skin is not tanned; because the operation works best for fair skin.

What preparations are made for laser epilation?
Before proceeding, the specialist cuts your hairs with a shaver to suitable sizes and the area is thoroughly cleaned with special gels, deodorants or creams. If you want to save time, you can make the shortening yourself a few days in advance. Pain is not felt much during the procedure. For people whose skin is sensitive to pain, local anesthesia can also be applied an hour before.

How is laser epilation applied?
A hand device firing laser beams is used for laser epilation. Thanks to this device, 15 mm diameter areas are scanned with rays and a single shot is made for each unit. During this process, people who do this job and have it done should wear glasses to protect their eyes from rays. The purpose of the rays thrown to the skin during epilation is to heat the melanin, the coloring agent in the hair follicles. Thus, melanin exposed to excessive heat destroys the hair follicles and renders them dysfunctional. The melanin, which holds the rays sent, sends this heat to the whole hair, and then the hair follicles are destroyed in a very short time like one millionth of a second. During this process, very minimal pain can be felt, and sometimes swelling and redness may occur in the winter roots. While continuing the treatment, on the one hand, air comes from the device for cooling purposes and this is to prevent pain and redness. Thus, the side effects are reduced and the feeling of pain is eliminated while the treatment continues.

After laser epilation:
After performing the procedure, ice compresses can be applied to the area for about 20 minutes. Thus, redness and pain in the hair follicles that cool down are reduced.
After epilation, moisturizing and softening the area contributes to the recovery of the body and speeds up the process.
Hot water should not be used for one day after epilation.
After the laser operation, activities that will create sweat in that area and heavy sports should be avoided.
Again, it is necessary not to be directly exposed to sunlight and sunbathing for 15 days following the procedure. If you have had the epilation done on the places that look like face and arms, it is better to use sunscreen if you need to go out in the sun.

How many sessions is laser epilation applied?
The reason for hair growth and the hair structure directly affects the number of sessions of laser epilation. Under normal conditions, you can get satisfactory results as a result of an application of 6 sessions. However, a 10-session procedure may be required in sensitive areas such as the face area and in the problem of hair growth due to various diseases. Session intervals should not be too long and should be repeated every 2 months.
